Chocolate Banana Smoothie -
A Healthy Chocolate Treat

What’s better than a chocolate smoothie?  Well a chocolate banana smoothie of course.  This is for all those people who love chocolate and bananas.  

If you have extra bananas lying around that need using, I highly recommend making one of these recipes.  And if you don’t fancy chugging down a lot of chocolate, these recipes are all made using cacao.

What is cacao?  Cacao is raw chocolate without the sugar.  That means you get that rich, velvety chocolate flavour without the calories.

Cacao is considered a superfood and is packed with antioxidants. But because cacao doesn’t have any added sugar it can be bitter, so needs sweetening.  The bananas will do a good job of adding some sweetness, but if you need extra, consider throwing in some dates, honey or berries.
 
I highly recommend using frozen bananas for these recipes.  Frozen bananas just seem to give your smoothies a creamier texture.  I buy a bag of bananas every time I go to the market.  I leave them sitting around until the skins ripen and go speckly, then I peel, chop and bag them, then pop them into the freezer.  This way I always have bananas on hand ready to throw into my blender. 

Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Ingredients

2 frozen bananas
1 cup almond milk
3 Medjool dates
1 tablespoon cacao

How to Make

Throw the frozen bananas into your blender, then add the dates, almond milk and cacao.  Blend until all the ingredients are well mixed and your smoothie becomes thick and creamy. 

Pour into two glasses.


Chocolate Banana Strawberry

Ingredients

1 frozen banana
1 cup strawberries
1 cup Greek style yogurt
½ cup almond milk
1/3 cup Goji berries
1 tablespoon cacao

How to Make

Place frozen banana and hulled and sliced strawberries into the bottom of your blender.  Add the almond milk, yogurt, Goji berries and cacao.  Blitz on high until all ingredients are blended and your smoothie is creamy.

Pour into 2 glasses.


Chocolate and Pear Smoothie

Ingredients

1 pear
1 frozen banana
1 cup vanilla yogurt
½ cup almond milk
1 tablespoon cacao
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to Make

Remove the stem and seeds from the pear and cut into quarters leaving the skin intact.  Place into your blender jug.  Add the banana, vanilla yogurt, almond milk, cacao and vanilla extract and blend on high until thick and creamy. 

Pour into two glasses


Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie

Ingredients

1 cup frozen raspberries
1 banana
1 tablespoon almond butter
1 tablespoon cacao
1 cup almond milk
1 teaspoon honey

How to Make

Place the raspberries, banana, almond butter, cacao and almond milk into the blender.   Blend together until smooth and creamy.   Do a taste test and add a teaspoon of honey if you need more sweetness.

Pour into two glasses and decorate with raspberries.
